Harald Bunge
Schools of Kung Fu Edinburgh
At Schools of Kung Fu Edinburgh, we believe that a great martial arts experience starts with a dedicated and passionate instructor. Harald Bunge, our head instructor, exemplifies this belief. With a wealth of experience and a genuine commitment to helping his students grow, Harald brings an unparalleled level of care, enthusiasm, and expertise to his classes.
A Lifelong Martial Artist with a Genuine Passion for Teaching
Harald’s martial arts journey began in his childhood, training in German Ringen (wrestling) and Judo in the 1980s. These early experiences laid the foundation for his deep respect for martial arts and the discipline they instil. His training later expanded into mixed martial arts with his brother, Olaf Schubert, who became a 5th Dan in Ki Aikido and now runs the successful Ki Aikido Dojo Rodgau.
While Harald’s career path took him through various industries—working as a master chef in prestigious hotels across Europe and in the motorcycle industry during his time in London—his love for martial arts never waned. His journey into Wing Chun Kung Fu began when he enrolled his then 4-year-old son at the Schools of Kung Fu Croydon. Seeing the transformative effect it had on his son, Harald knew he had found his true calling in Wing Chun.
A Commitment to Student Success
Harald’s teaching is grounded in his deep understanding of martial arts as both a physical and mental discipline. Having trained under the guidance of Master Alan Paterson and IWKA Grand Master Sergio Iadarola since 2013, Harald’s approach to instruction combines traditional techniques with modern teaching methods, ensuring every student progresses at their own pace in a supportive, encouraging environment.
Awarded his 1st Technician degree in 2021 by Master Alan Paterson, Harald continues to refine his skills and deepen his knowledge, always seeking to improve so he can offer the best instruction possible to his students. His own journey towards the 2nd Technician degree is a testament to his belief in lifelong learning and the importance of leading by example.
Your Progress Is His Priority
Harald’s teaching philosophy centres on the idea that every student, no matter their age or experience level, deserves personal attention and guidance. He takes the time to understand each student’s goals, challenges, and strengths, ensuring that they not only learn Wing Chun techniques but also build confidence, resilience, and discipline. His classes are structured to create an atmosphere where students feel empowered to grow both as martial artists and as individuals.
For Harald, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is watching his students succeed—whether it’s a child developing focus and coordination or an adult gaining self-confidence and mastering self-defence techniques. His enthusiasm for Wing Chun is infectious, and his dedication to his students’ progress is unmatched.
